Lough Derg Area

We’re lucky people. We work and live in a beautiful place on the shores of Lough Derg. Here’s a little information about the area and some places of interest.

Ballina & Killaloe

Killaloe, home of Brian Boru, the former High King of Ireland from 1002 to 1014, is situated on the banks of the River Shannon, amongst the Slieve Bernagh mountains of Clare and the Arra hills of Tipperary at the lower end of beautiful Lough Derg.

Killaloe and its twin town of Ballina are linked by an impressive 13 arch bridge which the River Shannon passes through enroute to the Atlantic Ocean.

There’s plenty to do in the bustling twin-towns, it’s a wonderful place for families with lots of activities and places of interest nearby. Take a lakeside walk, a lake cruise on the Spirit of Killaloe or hire a boat and go fishing. All sports are catered for to include hurling, gaelic football, rugby & soccer. Shoppers will enjoy an eclectic mix of shops and boutiques or the opportunity to buy fresh produce and crafts at the Farmer’s Market each Sunday, not to mention the large number of award winning restaurants & pubs – discoverkillaloe.ie

Scariff & Tuamgraney

The bustling market town of Scarriff and its neighbour Tuamgraney are something of a hub for the East Clare Area. The town has a heritage centre, a broad range of shops, restaurants, pubs and even a hand-made chocolate factory!

Mountshannon

Overlooking Lough Derg from the hillside, Mountshannon is a pretty village with its origins in the 18th Century. Home to the Iniscealtra Arts Festival, there’s a lot to do in Mountshannon. Take a woodland walk at Woodpark, hire a boat to Holy Island, or a swim in the harbour.

Garrykennedy

A picturesque village and harbour, Garrykennedy has good pubs and restaurants, often with traditional music accompaniment. Garrykennedy was a busy working port up to the 1950’s. It boasts some fine woodland and lakeside walks, including the Lakeside Forest Walk and the CastleLough Lakeside Forest Walk, with several alternate walking routes. There are some steep gradients suitable for hill walkers in the Garrykennedy Lakeside Forest Walk. Both forests include picnic areas and CastleLough Lakeside Forest has a children’s play area.
